A high-ranking Catholic Church officials resigned Tuesday after a blog posted cellphone data that allegedly linked him to Grindr and gay bars.
Reports say the general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill, allegedly used Grindr on an almost daily basis, including while on work-related trips and at his USCCB-owned home.
A blog called “The Pillar” exposed Burrill’s use of the gay dating app. The site, described as a Catholic-centered Substack dedicated to investigative journalism, said it used data app signals that were correlated to the Monsignor’s cellphone through a unique numerical identifier.
A Grindr spokesperson told the Washington Post that the data The Piller cited could not be publicly accessed. “The alleged activities listed in that unattributed blog post are infeasible from a technical standpoint and incredibly unlikely to occur,” and called the blog’s reporting “homophobic.”
