Professional indoor football player Jordan Jones was fatally shot early Saturday morning after authorities say he stepped in to break up a fight outside a Georgia bar.
According to the Acworth Police Department, officers responded to a shooting at Saddle Bar around 2:42 a.m. When they arrived, they found Jones suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began rendering aid at the scene.
Jones was transported to Kennestone Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators say Jones had been working as a security guard at the bar when a fight broke out involving 25-year-old Daniel Di Vonne Parsons. Police allege Jones intervened to break up the altercation, but the situation escalated after Parsons retrieved a firearm and shot him.
Parsons was later arrested and now faces charges including felony murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and no additional details are available at this time,” the Acworth Police Department said in a statement.
Jones, 28, built an impressive football career that began at Mountain View High School before continuing at the University of West Alabama. During his college career, he recorded 211 total tackles, 17 sacks, five forced fumbles, and one interception.
He later went on to play professionally in the Indoor Football League with the Tulsa Oilers and the San Antonio Gunslingers. Jones had recently signed with the Michigan Arsenal and was preparing to compete in the upcoming Arena Football One League season.
In a statement, the Indoor Football League honored the impact Jones had on the sport and the people around him.
“A talented player and respected competitor, Jordan left a lasting mark on the league and those who had the privilege of knowing him,” the league said.
Jones is remembered by teammates, friends, and family as a dedicated athlete who stepped in to help others even in dangerous moments.
