Washington DC, USA - June 27, 2016: Pro-choice supporters celebrate in front of the U.S. Supreme Court after the court, in a 5-3 ruling, struck down a Texas abortion access law.

Twelve states are suing the Food and Drug Administration over unsupported federal abortion regulations.

On Thursday, Washington state and Oregon filed a lawsuit with hopes of expanding the abortion pill, mifepristone, and allow it to be prescribed and dispensed by any doctor or pharmacy. As of right now, pharmacies and doctors who has access to mifepristone, must have obtained a special certification.

In addition, the lawsuit argues that the medication is “safer than many other common drugs FDA regulates, such as Viagra and Tylenol.”

“The federal government has known for years that mifepristone is safe and effective,” Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson said. “In the wake of the Supreme Court’s radical decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the FDA is now exposing doctors, pharmacists and patients to unnecessary risk. The FDA’s excessive restrictions on this important drug have no basis in medical science.”

Meanwhile, anti-abortion activists have also filed a lawsuit to end the access to Mifepristone in Texas. The activists claims the FDA used an improper process to get the drug approved. They added that the company did not consider the safety minors when approving the drug.

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court overturn the 1973 landmark case, Roe vs. Wade which made history by legalizing abortions for women nationwide. The overturn resulted in many Republican-led states to implemented strict abortion bans.

Mifepristone was approved by the FDA in 2000 for medication abortion during the first ten weeks of pregnancy.

Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Vermont are also apart of the lawsuit.
