Black Girl Magic in Action: 12-Year-Old Eniola Shokunbi Raises $11.5 Million for Air Filtration Innovation

STEM student Eniola Shokunbi

STEM student Eniola Shokunbi is proving that big ideas can come from the most unexpected places.

At just 12, this young innovator landed $11.5 million to fund an air filtration system to fight viral illnesses like COVID-19.

With her classmates at Commodore MacDonough STEM Academy and scientists from UConn, Shokunbi helped create an affordable air filtration system using simple materials like furnace filters, cardboard, and duct tape.

What’s even more impressive? Each unit costs only $60 to produce, making it an affordable way to keep classrooms safe.

Earlier this week, Shokunbi watched as the State Bond Commission awarded the funding to install the system in schools across Connecticut.

But Shokunbi isn’t stopping there.

With plans to expand the air filtration system to schools nationwide, her drive and vision could change the way we think about health and safety in education.

A true example of Black Girl Magic, Eniola’s got the world in her hands.
