A 14-year-old boy police have nicknamed “El Chapito” has been arrested for murdering eight people in a suburb outside of Mexico City.
The federal Public Safety Department said Thursday the boy allegedly opened fire on a family reportedly celebrating a birthday party in Chimalhuacan. Eight people were killed, and seven others were injured in the January attack. Two of the wounded victims were children.
A second man was arrested in connection to the killings, along with seven other gang members that were arrested on drug charges.
The juvenile suspect’s name was not released, according to the Associated Press, nor was a motive for the killings. However, cartels in Mexico frequently target their rivals for murder.
The boy’s nickname, “Little Chapo,” is a nod to imprisoned Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman.
