17 Owners Including Jerry Jones Move To Stop Roger Goodell’s Contract Extension

Amid the national anthem controversy that has halted NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s extension, several team owners have banned together in attempt to prevent it all together.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen, 17 owners, including Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones, convened on a conference call to discuss  “hijacking” Roger Goodell’s contract extension.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“You don’t get to have this many messes over the years like Roger has had and survive it,” an owner said Thursday.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Maybe Arthur [Blank, head of compensation committee] and that committee think they’re on track. But they have a lot more resistance than they counted on –and maybe they don’t know how the resistance is growing as we speak,” another said.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The owners are said to be unhappy with Goodell’s handling of issues in the NFL, dating back to the Ray Rice controversy and on. According to reports, Jones has spearheaded efforts to oust Goodell as commissioner; however, the owner would still need to get 23 other owners to agree.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“That was our recurring theme, that there’s no leadership,” an exec said. “Everyone there [in the league office] is trying to win the latest news cycle, and there’s no long-term vision. It’s just, ‘How can we minimize the bad headlines, maximize the revenue and move on to the next day?’ And there’s an increasing frustration to that approach.”
