Early Monday, Hurricane Beryl hit the Texas coast as a Category 1 storm, causing widespread chaos and leaving millions without power. The storm, which made landfall near Matagorda, unleashed torrential rain, life-threatening storm surges, and wind gusts reaching up to 97 mph. As Beryl moved inland, it weakened to a tropical storm but still caused significant damage, resulting in the deaths of two people. In separate incidents, two people were killed after trees fell on top of their homes in the Houston area.
Eastern Texas was heavily affected, with massive power outages, disrupted flights, and ongoing rescue operations. Over 2 million people were left without electricity, and the severe weather conditions led to the deaths of a man in Harris County and a 74-year-old woman, both killed by falling trees.
Beryl’s impact was felt not just in Texas but across the Caribbean last week, where it left a trail of destruction and claimed at least 11 lives. The storm had earlier reached Category 5 status before weakening and then regaining strength as it approached the Texas coast.
