50 Cent has come out on top in a $1 billion lawsuit filed by Cory “Ghost” Holland Sr., a former drug kingpin who claimed that the rapper and co-creator of Power stole his life story for the show’s plot. After the court ruled in his favor, 50 Cent couldn’t resist taking to Instagram to crack a joke about the situation.
On August 3, 50 posted a screenshot of a headline announcing his victory, adding a humorous caption: “Fool thought he was Ghost 😆 da fvck wrong wit these 🥷’s man 🤨 LOL.” The judge, Analisa Torres, decided that the show did not directly reference Holland, leading to the dismissal of the case.
Holland had initially sued 50 Cent, Courtney Kemp (co-creator of Power), STARZ, and Lionsgate back in 2021. He alleged that Kemp’s father, whom he met in the early ’90s, was told his life story during his transition out of the drug trade. Holland also claimed he sent a CD containing an autobiographical song about his experiences as a drug lord, which he believed 50 Cent used to create Power. Holland argued that over 200 scenes from the show were based on his life.
Holland emphasized that his lawsuit was not just a fan’s baseless claim but a serious accusation of life theft, stating, “This is about the actual theft of my life, and the damages that it has done as well as the profits that the defendants have made from the stealing and telling of my life story without my consent.”
However, 50 Cent’s attorney, Joanna Hill, argued that Holland failed to provide evidence of any defamatory statements or direct connections to his life within the fictional series.
