An 81-year-old Ohio man has been charged with multiple counts, including murder, after fatally shooting 61-year-old Uber driver Loletha Hall.
Authorities state that William Brock believed Hall was conspiring with a scammer who had earlier targeted him.
According to Lt. Kristopher Shultz of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began with a deceptive phone call to Brock. The caller, impersonating a court officer, claimed a family member of Brock’s needed money for bail. The scam escalated to a ransom demand, with the scammer arranging for an Uber to collect the supposed bail money from Brock’s residence.
“Ms. Hall did not have any idea of the scam’s background,” Lt. Shultz explained. When Hall arrived at Brock’s home and approached the door, Brock, suspecting her involvement, confronted her with a firearm, demanding to know her affiliations. Despite Hall’s attempts to leave, Brock forcibly took her cellphone and shot her after a brief verbal exchange. Hall was unarmed and did not pose a physical threat to Brock, who eventually shot her three times before contacting the police.
Loletha Hall succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. In response to the incident, Uber has expressed deep sorrow and extended their condolences to Hall’s family, also noting their cooperation with law enforcement and their action of banning the account that requested the ride to Brock’s home.
During a grand jury hearing, Brock faced indictments for three counts of murder, felonious assault, and kidnapping. His arraignment is scheduled later this week. He was previously granted a $200,000 bond after his initial arraignment on a murder charge and could face 15 years to life in prison if convicted.
The case remains under investigation, with authorities yet to identify the scammer or make additional arrests related to the scam.
