On Saturday night, Hospital Sainte Musse in Toulon, France, had to partially evacuate after a man came in with an explosive in his rectum.
It was reported by the New York Post that an 88-year-old man had an artillery shell wedged in his rectum from World War I.
A great deal of hospital staff was concerned the object would explode inside him, but he informed them it was “demilitarized,” the French newspaper Nice-Matin reported.
According to the hospital spokesperson, the hospital evacuated some of its facilities from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. local time, specifically “the evacuation of adult and pediatric emergencies as well as the diversion of incoming emergencies.”
Patients in intensive care were also transferred to an outdoor tent.  The incident “required bomb disposal personnel’s intervention.”

“We had to manage the risk in a reactive framework.  When in doubt, we took all the precautions,” the rep said.  Bomb disposal experts concluded that the object would not likely explode and “reassured us by telling us that it was a collector’s item from the First World War, used by the French military,” the hospital added.

The shell, which is around 8 inches long and more than 2 inches wide, was then extracted in an attempt by hospital doctors.  It had to be removed through his abdomen, which required surgery.
Fortunately, he is well and should fully recover in the coming days.
