A Los Angeles mall has implemented new age restrictions for minors wishing to visit after a large brawl occurred in December 2023.
After 3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance will prohibit unsupervised shoppers under 18. Any accompanying adult must be at least 21 years old and stay with the minor(s) throughout their visit.
The mall allows up to four minors to be accompanied by one adult, provided they remain together, and the adult assumes responsibility for the actions of the minors under their supervision while at the mall.
“We are committed to providing a pleasant and family-friendly shopping environment for all of our guests,” the mall wrote on its website.
Additionally, the mall specified that minors and accompanying adults might need to present “acceptable proof of age” in the form of photo identification with a date of birth. Acceptable forms of ID include driver’s licenses, state-issued IDs, military IDs, school IDs, or passports.
Individuals who are unable to provide “acceptable documentation” when requested will either be asked to leave the property or denied entry.
Nevertheless, employees under the age of 18 at the mall are subject to the same rules as visitors, as per the shopping center’s policy. While minors are permitted to work inside their place of employment after 3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, they must follow the new regulations within the mall if their shift concludes during the hours covered by the policy.
The new policy follows a disturbance involving “more than 1,000 young people” in December 2023. The incident led to five arrests and three injuries, including a police officer. The incident escalated to involve 30 businesses within the mall and was brought under control only a riot gear.
