Amtrak has officially launched its NextGen Acela service, ushering in a new era of high-speed rail with sleek new trains now operating between Washington, DC, New York City, and Boston.

The inaugural journey kicked off at Washington’s historic Union Station and arrived at Penn Station in New York, setting the tone for a travel experience that blends speed, comfort, and tech-forward amenities.

Described by Amtrak as a “premium service,” NextGen Acela trains offer travelers high-speed Wi-Fi, USB ports, power outlets, and reading lights at every seat. The sleek interiors, more spacious cabins, and redesigned café cars are designed for both work and relaxation. With 27% more seats per trip and enhanced weekday and weekend schedules, passengers will have greater flexibility than ever before.

Tickets come at a premium. One-way business class fares between Washington and New York on Friday, August 29th, were listed at $498. Still, Amtrak says the value is clear: “faster travel, greater convenience, and a more enjoyable overall experience.”

Amtrak plans to grow the fleet to 28 trains by 2027, boosting service levels and reliability across the Northeast Corridor, already one of the busiest in the country. With faster speeds, cutting-edge amenities, and more frequent departures, the NextGen Acela is set to raise the bar for U.S. train travel.
