Aries Spears is back in the headlines and this time, it’s not for comedy. The outspoken and often problematic entertainer sparked major controversy this week after posting a video on social media that took direct aim at Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese while hyping up Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark.
Spears dropped a self-hating, profanity-laced rant where he rejected the idea that the Clark-Reese rivalry is about race. But it wasn’t just his message—it was the tone and disrespectful jabs that got folks heated.
“Yo, my beautiful Black people, what up? It’s your boy Aries Spears right here,” he began. “Listen, I want to address this whole Caitlin Clark, Angela Reese thing. Black people, I love you, but for the love of God, knock it the f*** off. Stop making this about race.”
“Let’s play the race card and save it for when we really need it. Otherwise, this is a waste of race. This ain’t about race. This is about ball. Who’s good and who’s not?”
Then Spears made things personal.
“Mix me with that Black power bulls***. Caitlin Clark is bananas. Angel Reese is garbage. And maybe if she cared more about putting time in the gym instead of trying to be a runway model and be curious, we wouldn’t have this conversation.”

The backlash came quick. Many fans took issue with Spears referring to Reese as “garbage” and accusing her of caring more about image than game. Some even labeled his comments misogynistic and racially insensitive, especially for reducing a young Black woman’s hard work to fashion choices.
Clark and Reese have been the focus of constant media attention since entering the WNBA, with every matchup scrutinized for more than just basketball. While some argue that race is clearly a factor in how the two players are covered, Spears isn’t having it—and he made it very clear.
His use of “waste of race” and “Black power bulls***” rubbed many the wrong way. Critics say Spears’ so-called call for fairness was actually a public takedown of a promising Black athlete, disguised as tough love.
The timing of the rant couldn’t be more controversial. Just last week, Clark and Reese clashed in a tense game where a flagrant foul and multiple technicals made headlines. Social media has been flooded with takes, from those defending Clark’s stardom to those calling out the double standard Reese faces as a confident Black woman in sports.
Bottom line? Aries Spears made a mess trying to play referee. While he claims the Clark-Reese drama is just about skills, his delivery and disrespect toward Reese only added more fuel to an already intense national debate. Whether he meant to or not, Spears became part of the controversy himself.
