A volunteer in AtraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine trial has died in Brazil, health officials reported.
The Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) received information Monday from an investigation into the death.
The identity of the participant was not released. Still, local outlet Globo reported that it was a 28-year-old doctor in Rio De Janeiro.
It is unknown if the volunteer received the potential vaccine or the placebo.
“We cannot comment on individual cases in an ongoing trial of the Oxford vaccine as we adhere strictly to medical confidentiality and clinical trial regulations, but we can confirm that all required review processes have been followed,” AstraZeneca told NBC News in a statement.
The statement went on to say that trial investigators carefully assess all significant medical events, and the study would continue.
Previously, one of the trial participants from the United Kingdom suffered an adverse reaction, temporarily pausing the study.
