Auli’i Cravalho announced in an Instagram post that she won’t be reprising her role as the voice of Moana in the live-action remake of the 2016 movie. Instead, the 22-year-old actress will serve as an executive producer of the film.
“When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career,” Cravalho said in the video message. “In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital that casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell.”
She continued, “As an executive producer on the film, I can’t wait to find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength.”
“I’m truly honored to pass this baton to the next woman of Pacific Island descent to honor our incredible Pacific peoples, cultures, and communities that help inspire her story, and I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representation to come. Mahalo,” Cravalho concluded.
Dwayne Johnson, who voiced the demigod Maui in the animated film, announced the live-action Moana remake was in the works back in April. The film will be produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions along with Beau Flynn via Flynn Picture Co. In addition to Cravalho, Scott Sheldo will also executive produce. Jared Bush and Samoan industry leader Dana Ledoux Miller will also be involved in the film’s production.
