In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Dan Gasby, husband of well-known restauranteur and lifestyle guru B. Smith – who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2013 – opened up about his “new normal” as a caregiver for his wife and boyfriend to his live-in girlfriend, Alex Lernar.
However, despite his explanation, in which he revealed he’d been open about his new relationship with Smith, many were outraged over the simple fact that Smith has Alzheimer’s, as it remains unclear if the famed guru comprehends the new arrangement.
But now, in a recent appearance on Dr. Oz, Gasby and his girlfriend are defending their new lifestyle, calling the outrage and judgment “maddening” and “rather appalling,” given Smith’s condition.
“What a lot of people don’t understand about Alzheimer’s [is that] B now is really like a 4-year-old..” Lerner said in a clip from the forthcoming episode, set to air on Tuesday. “Like a toddler in an adult body and can’t take care of herself at all. She needs 24-hour care.”
In another exclusive clip obtained by PEOPLE, Gasby opens up about the backlash and explains how overwhelming and out of control it’s been, as the two have been receiving death threats.
“We’ve had people just do all kind of crazy things. They’ve never been to our restaurants. We don’t know them. They make all kind of racial innuendos.”
But, according to Gasby, for the people that do know him and his wife, he says they’ve been very supportive of the entire situation.
“All the ones that now B are extremely supportive have no problems with it,” Gasby of his wife of 26 years. “The people because she’s a celebrity, a personality quote, unquote, they weigh in, and what they do is they attach what they feel B would. They attach their feelings as ‘Well, B doesn’t know. She wouldn’t want this.’ Well, if B knew, I wouldn’t be with Alex because she wouldn’t have Alzheimer’s.”
