New details have emerged regarding the deaths of three American tourists found dead in a Bahamas Sandals resort.
Earlier this month, travelers planning on visiting the island were placed on high alert when three Americans were found deceased inside separate villas at Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma island. Tennessee residents 68-year-old Michael Phillips, and 65-year-old Robbie Phillips were found together, while 64-year-old Vincent Chiarella of Florida was found in his villa on May 6th. The victims were discovered lifeless in their rooms after seeking medical care the night before for feeling ill. A pathology report released on Monday confirmed that all three died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Chiarella’s wife, Donnis, is the lone survivor of the carbon monoxide incident. She has since been released from HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in Miami after making a full recovery.
For weeks, many have speculated about what caused the deaths, with theories including foul play and tainted food. Several visitors also reported a strong odor of insecticides around the time that the deaths occurred. Investigators are now looking into possible air conditioning, and water heater leaks on the property as the source of the carbon monoxide. The deceased showed no signs of trauma, but there was evidence of convulsions.
The families are requesting a second autopsy on the victims.
