Barack Obama had originally planned a blowout for his 60th birthday party, including hosting 700 guests at his Martha’s Vineyard mansion. However, after drawing criticism amid a surge in coronavirus cases, the event was significantly scaled back.
Instead, Saturday’s party hosted about 200 of the Obamas’ closest family and friends. The guest list included such names as Steven Spielberg, Gayle King, Tom Hanks, and Rita Wilson. The guests were treated to performances by H.E.R., Erykah Badu, and John Legend.
Despite the smaller event, sources close to the event told PEOPLE that the former president “danced all night” with the “biggest smile.”
Custom black masks were made for the event, and although they were required for anyone working the event, they were optional for guests. Most guests opted to forego wearing one, according to the source. The masks featured a “44×60” monogram, as did the cocktail napkins and staff badges.
A massive tent was erected outside the home for the outdoor party, along with a large dance floor.
Obama also asked guests to donate to the Obama Foundation instead of any gifts.
Videos and pictures from the event were circulated on social media by some of the attendees. However, due to a photography ban, the posts were later deleted.
