BET has announced that Prince will be honored at the 2016 BET Awards on Sunday, June 26th. The network released a short video clip following the Billboard Music Awards tribute to the legend, suggesting Prince will be honored by BET as well. The tribute will include live performances by Shelia E., The Roots, D’Angelo, Janelle Monae and more.
Since the passing of the music icon, artists have incorporated Prince songs into their live concerts to pay their respects to the legend. However, some tributes have been received by Prince fans better than others.
The BBMAs tribute, which featured Madonna with an appearance by Stevie Wonder, caused a lot of commotion. Prince fans were not pleased with the performance at all. Days leading up to the tribute several fans expressed their frustration, causing BBMA executive producer and Questlove, who produced the tribute, to defend the decision in choosing Madonna. The performance was way below par, according to Prince fans all over, however, BET promised to do better.
BET dropped a teaser immediately after the tribute, which wrote, “Yeah, we saw that. Don’t worry. We got you.” Madonna fired back via Instagram writing, “Anyone who wants to do a tribute to Prince is welcome to. Whatever your age, gender or skin color. If you loved him and he inspired you then show it!!!! I love Prince 4ever.”
The network also announced Alicia Keys and Maxwell will perform at the awards show.
