As the world recently celebrated World Photography Day, it’s the perfect time to highlight some of the most successful Black photographers and their captivating art. While the art form has evolved significantly over the years, it’s important to acknowledge that, like many other fields, photography has faced challenges with diversity and representation. However, this generation of photographers is breaking barriers and making a name for themselves through their work. So, we’re shining a light on groundbreaking photographers making waves in the industry.
Raven Varona
Varona’s journey into photography began with capturing concerts and live events. Over the years, her distinctive eye has propelled her to new heights in her career, opening doors for her to shoot magazine covers and celebrity portraits. Varona’s work reached another milestone during Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s tour, earning her a nomination for the Favorite Tour Photographer award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in 2019.
Tyler Mitchell
In 2018, Tyler Mitchell made history as the first Black photographer to shoot a cover for Vogue US. Beyond the accolade, the moment gained even more recognition because Mitchell captured Beyoncé for the magazine’s iconic September issue. His work is heavily influenced by his upbringing in Atlanta, Georgia, making him one of the most sought-after photographers of his generation. Additionally, Mitchell’s artwork has earned a permanent place in The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.
Ally Green
This California-based photographer is a force to be reckoned with, as her work celebrates Black beauty and power, often highlighting the diversity within the culture. Green’s work has graced the pages of magazines such as Teen Vogue and Forbes, with collaborations that include Nike and Dior. Through her lens, Green challenges traditional beauty standards and creates photos that resonate with individuals around the world.
Breyona Holt
Breyona Holt is not only a talented photographer but also a visionary giving back to her community through her studio, Exquisite Eye Studios. Beyond serving the public, Holt juggles her multifaceted career, which includes cinematography and creative direction on music videos for artists like Normani and Childish Gambino. Additionally, Holt has partnered with brands such as Fenty Beauty, Nike, and Tiffany & Co., further proving that she is a staple within the photography industry.
These photographers are just a few of the Black creatives who are constantly changing the industry. Their work is not only impressive but also impactful, challenging norms and advocating for more inclusion and representation. Even though World Photography Day 2024 has come to an end, let’s continue to celebrate these individuals and their contributions to photography.
