British millionaire John Broadhurst who used the “rough sex” defense in his trial for the death of his girlfriend, will be released in early October — less than halfway through his sentence.
Bradhurst, 41, was sentenced to three years and eight months for the death of Natalie Connolly, 26, in 2018.
Two separate sources confirmed to the Birmingham Mail that Broadhurst will be released early this month after serving just 22 months of his sentence.
The 26-year-old mother-of-one was left to die in a pool of blood at the bottom of a flight of stairs at their home in Kenrose Mill, Kinver.
Connolly suffered over 40 injuries, including a “blow-out” fracture of her left eye socket, bruising, and internal injuries.
Broadhurst admitted leaving Connolly alone without calling emergency services “where a risk of death as a result of her serious condition would have been obvious.”
He claimed her injuries resulted from rough sex and admitted to a charge of manslaughter by gross negligence. He was cleared of murder at the direction of the judge following legal submissions, according to The Daily Mail.
Broadhurst’s sentence was blasted as a miscarriage of justice and led to a change in the law, disallowing the use of the “rough sex” defense. The use of the “rough sex” defense claimed the victim consented to injuries that caused their death.
Mark Garnier, Connolly’s MP before she got with Broadhurst, worked with other MPs to scrap the controversial defense, and the government has since amended the Domestic Violence Bill to disallow the defense from being used.
“There is no justice in this. There never has been for Natalie,” Garnier said. “She was deprived of her life and of her reputation by this man, and he got 18 months for it.”
