2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton appeared on RG3 and The Ones podcast, where he spoke about potentially returning to the NFL if the New York Jets ever came calling about a potential replacement for Aaron Rodgers. Newton said the Jets would have to give him a pretty penny to go and play in the Meadowlands.
“You not about to sit here and penny pinch me, bro,” Newton said. I’m about to sit up here and sign no $5.5 (million) deal, bro. Those days are over with. I’d be wasting my time,” the former Panthers quarterback said.
The Jets had a discouraging 23-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs team. New York possesses an impressive defense and a solid amount of offensive firepower. When Aaron Rodgers went down four plays into the season, the bad luck that plagued the Jets for decades continued. Newton said if he would have a call with the Jets, a lot of clarity would be necessary,
“In any situation, I’m gonna sit up there, and I’m gonna analyze it as much as possible,” Newton said. “I don’t want to walk into a dysfunctional situation. Have you guys made Zach Wilson aware? Also, Aaron Rogers is trying to come back this year; let’s talk about that. So when he comes back, is it just gonna be something that you just say, ‘Ay watch out.’ So it’s a lot of things that I don’t just make impulse decisions,” he said.
Newton has seven children and has fully embraced fatherhood, which is one of the main pillars as to why Newton has found peace with life after football. “I have seven beautiful children that I love takin’ to football practice, tennis practice, cheering’ practice, and all that. To get me up out takin’ them on a day-to-day basis, takin’ them to school, those are some of the things that you have to consider,” he added.
Newton likely does not have to worry about the Jets calling; however, I believe Newton would come back for 2 million; 5.5 is a stretch.
