Thieves made off with nearly $50k in merchandise from a Celine Boutique in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City on Thursday.
The New York Police Department said the robbery happened around 12:30 p.m. on Wooster Street. Two of the robbers casually entered the store, while three more pushed the doors in and fought with the high-end store’s security.Â
One of Celine’s security guards was injured in the melee, with injuries to the elbow and thumb.Â
The suspects were able to flee the store with tons of merchandise, estimated to total around $48,300. The French retailer sells handbags for thousands of dollars apiece.
Celine was one of the retailers looted during the protests following George Floyd’s death in 2020. At the time, the suspects were able to grab $1.5 million in merchandise from the store.Â
Robberies at high-end retailers have spiked during the coronavirus pandemic across the country. Very prevalent in California, Manhattan is not immune. Tourneau Jewelers in Midtown was the victim of a smash-and-grab in December where thieves made off with $25,000 worth of watches. Similarly, Superdry had a display window smashed out, and the mannequins looted for their clothes.Â
