Chadwick Boseman has been posthumously nominated for a 2021 Independent Spirit Award.
People reports that when the nominees for the award show were announced on Tuesday morning, Boseman’s name was amongst the nominees for the Best Male Lead award. He was nominated for his role in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, his final role.
Ma Rainey’s is based on August Wilson’s 1982 play about Ma Rainey, the “Mother of Blues,” and tells the story of her experience with white management. The film is set in 1927 Chicago and examines racial tension in the music industry.
Boseman passed away at the age of 43 in August after a four-year battle with colon cancer.
The other nominees in the category include Riz Ahmed for The Sound of Metal, Rob Morgan for Bull, Steven Yeun for Minari, and Adarsh Gourav for The White Tiger.
The 36th Independent Spirit Awards are set to take place on Thursday, April 22, and will broadcast live on IFC at 10 p.m. EST.
