The 36-year-old joins a distinguished group of Bulls legends: Jerry Sloan (No. 4), Bob Love (No. 10), Michael Jordan (No. 23), and Scottie Pippen (No. 33). The NBA also retired Bill Russell’s No. 6 across the league following his passing in 2022.
The announcement was made by President & CEO Michael Reinsdorf, who shared the news with Rose in person.
“Derrick’s talent was extraordinary, but what always impressed me most was how he remained humble and let his basketball play speak for him,” Reinsdorf said. “His connection with Chicago was undeniable, and it has only grown stronger over time.”
Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf emphasized that retiring a jersey honors a player’s lasting impact on the organization and the emotional bond with fans.
“Derrick is both a hometown hero and a symbol of an entire era of Bulls basketball,” he stated.
Rose, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, became the youngest MVP in NBA history in 2011 and guided the Bulls to multiple playoff appearances. His career averages of 19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 6.2 assists place him among the best in franchise history, solidifying his legacy in Chicago.
