Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy will not face charges after Williamson County authorities opted not to proceed with the case.
Worthy, a former Texas football star residing in Georgetown, was arrested Friday on a third-degree felony charge of assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation. However, on Saturday evening, Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick informed the Statesman that his office is not moving forward with the case at this time.
“After further investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and further discussion with a third-party witness, Mr. Worthy, and his attorneys, this case is being declined at this time pending completion of the investigation,” an email from Dick’s office stated. “Mr. Worthy and his lawyers are fully cooperating with this investigation.”
The DA’s office added, “We will continue to evaluate the case. As is our practice with all declines, should you develop additional information indicative of probable cause in this case, our office will consider that information and may present the case at that time to a Williamson County Grand Jury.”
Worthy remained in jail as of 5:50 p.m. Saturday, awaiting release. His attorney, Sam Bassett, assured, “We will continue to cooperate.”
In a statement, Bassett and attorney Chip Lewis asserted Worthy’s innocence.
“The complainant was recently asked to vacate Mr. Worthy’s residence upon discovery of her infidelity… She has refused to do so and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation.”
