A professor at the University of West Georgia has been charged with murder in connection to the death of an incoming student.
This past weekend, police in Carrollton, Georgia, arrested and charged now-former University of West Georgia professor Richard Sigman, 47, with murder after he allegedly fatally shot 18-year-old Anna Jones. The incident reportedly took place the Saturday at around 12:30 a.m., the same day Sigman was arrested, NBC News reports.
The shooting happened off Adamson Square in a courthouse parking garage. At the time, Sigman was getting into it verbally with another man at a pizza shop called Leopoldo’s. The other man reportedly told at least one of the security guards that were around that Sigman had a gun. When the guard went to address Sigman, they saw he had a gun and told him to leave.
When Sigman walked away, he walked into the parking garage, where he started firing shots into a parked vehicle, where Jones was, NBC News reports.
“The investigation then indicates Sigman walked into the parking deck and began shooting into a parked vehicle striking the victim. Friends immediately drove her to the hospital where she was pronounced deceased,” Carrollton police wrote in a Facebook statement.
Sigman has been charged with murder, three counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He’s currently being held at Carroll County Jail; he is set to appear in court on September 2.
