A college student who was trying to buy food for a homeless man had the police called on her.
Last month, Georgia State University student Jo Ortega noticed a homeless man who looked like he was hungry as she was picking up an order for DoorDash at a Popeyes located near Ponce de Leon Ave. Wanting to help, the woman tried to buy some chicken to give him. However, the workers reportedly wouldn’t allow her to do so, Fox News reports.
The incident went viral after it was captured on video and posted to TikTok. “No ma’am, you can’t do it,” said one of the Popeyes workers in the video.
When Ortega asked why she couldn’t give the man food, the employee replied: “Ma’am, you can’t do it. I could care less about you recording me, baby.” The workers then escalated the situation by calling the police on Ortega.
“At that moment, I was terrified. I thought I was gonna get arrested,” she said in an interview with Fox 5 Atlanta.” Maybe I should just call my family, and I might not be coming home tonight.” No one was arrested once police pulled up to the scene.
In fact, the officers thanked Ortega for trying to do a good deed. “The officer pulled me to the side and said, ‘I really thank you for doing that, thank you for buying him food. I appreciate that,'” said Ortega.
By the end of it, the homeless man and Ortega were able to order whatever they wanted for free after Ortega hit up the Popeyes location’s manager. In a statement to Fox 5, Popeyes said it is “committed to treating everyone with dignity and respect,” Fox News reports.
