Comedian Jerrod Carmichael says Dave Chappelle has picked “an odd hill to die on.”

In a recent interview with GQ Hype, Carmichael addressed Chappelle’s current controversies. Chappelle has been the topic of discussion for his stand-up material that’s been criticized as transphobic.

During the interview, Carmichael questioned why Chappelle would want his legacy to be surrounded by criticism.

“Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro? That’s the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans sh*t? It’s an odd hill to die on,” he said. “And it’s like, hey, bro. Who the f*ck are you? Who do you f*ck? What do you like to do? Childish jokes aside, who the f*ck are you? It’s just kind of played. But he’s choosing to die on the hill. So, alright, let him.”

This isn’t the first time Carmichael spoke about Chappelle’s work. Earlier this month, Carmichael told Hot 97 that Chappelle spent “like, three specials talking about other people’s sh*t.”

Elsewhere in his interview, Carmichael discussed his views on generational differences and how people offer words of support during major life milestones.

“I love this generation,” he said. “I actually f*ck with them, and f*ck all those comedians that are going so hard against them.”

Carmichael’s response transitioned into him speaking on “cancel culture.”

“What does that mean, that people are mad on Twitter? Everybody’s fine. These grown men are fine,” he said. “I think, a lot of times, people who offer nothing truthful or meaningful about themselves then complain about society at large and create this boogeyman. It’s like, listen, that’s the most urgent thing in your life? God bless you. I’m tired of hearing it.”
