Despite Drake and Kendrick Lamar‘s rap beef simmering out, many individuals are still raving about the situation, especially Common, who dubbed the beef as a pivotal moment for Hip-Hop. During his recent appearance on the Earn Your Leisure podcast, the Grammy award-winning artist shared his opinion on the matter and gave some insight into the clash.
“The battle? I gotta say, initially, I was like, ‘Wow. This is for real. These dudes are going at it because Drake was delivering and then Kendrick came, and Kendrick kept giving him blows,’” Common said.
He continued, “[Kendrick] did what he had to do and he came out the victor… point blank, he won. I think it’s just a victory for hip-hop that the battle went down the way it did and had people paying attention to lyrics in hip-hop.”
Additionally, according to Common, one of Kendrick’s most striking aspects was his ability to deliver a deeper message into his lyrics while so making them catchy.
“I love that Kendrick, within a battle, is able to give you lessons and spiritual things,” Common said. “This dude is dropping knowledge and still battling. It’s ridiculous.”
Meanwhile, on the other hand, Common took a moment to praise Drake as well, despite declaring Kendrick as the winner of the dispute.
“Drake is among the most talented songwriters-artists to do music,” he added. “To be able to make songs at the level and be making hits over and over, that says something. Even pop artists that had some big hits, they don’t last decades. So, Drake is a super talented dude.”
Common’s views on the Kendrick-Drake feud come down to what was best for the culture. Their beef forced fans to pay attention to the lyrics and artistic messages and as Common puts it, “It’s a victory for hip-hop that the battle went down the way it did.”
