Black actors and actresses have racked up nominations at this year’s Oscars.

On Tuesday, the list of nominees was unveiled, and some of our favorites are up for awards. Adding to the positive news, a number of prominent Black entertainers have received their first-ever nominations. Danielle Brooks, Sterling K. Brown, Colman Domingo, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Jeffrey Wright are making their debut on this year’s nominations list. Brooks picked up “Best Supporting Actress” for her role as Sophia in “The Color Purple.” Wright and Brown are both nominated for “Best Actor” and “Best Supporting Actor,” respectively, for their roles in “American Fiction.” Domingo was recognized for his work “Rustin” in the category of “Lead Actor.” Many expected Fantasia Barrino to be nominated for “Best Actress” for her leading role as Celie in the reimagined version of “The Color Purple,” though she was snubbed. In fact, Brooks picked up the single nomination for the critically acclaimed musical film.

“Oppenheimer” takes the lead in the 2024 Oscar nominations. The movie secured a total of 13 nominations, trailed by “Poor Things” with 11, “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10, and “Barbie” with eight. The 96th annual Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 10th, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will air live on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel will return for the fourth time as host.
