A few days after Michael Vick was introduced as the head coach of Norfolk State University, one of his most reliable targets and NFL All-Pro DeSean Jackson followed in his footsteps, accepting the head coach position at Delaware State. The former wide receiver accepted the job Thursday, as first reported by Jeff Lightsy Jr.
Both teams compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
The Spartans defeated Delaware State 38-19 earlier this year. The Hornets finished last in their conference with a 1-10 record. Like Vick, Jackson faces an uphill battle but brings strong communication skills and the ability to connect with players. Seeing a highlight player like Jackson on the recruiting trail offers hope to a program that has struggled, going 8-48 since 2015.
Former head coach Rod Milstead finished with an overall record of 5-18, making it clear the program needed a fresh start. Jackson is a great addition, and it will be intriguing to hear his vision and how he plans to lead the team.
Jackson is a three-time Pro Bowler with a 15-year NFL career. He finished his playing days with over 11,500 yards from scrimmage and 58 touchdowns across 183 games. Vick and Jackson have instantly made two historically Black colleges must-watch programs, paving the way for increased attention on HBCUs heading into 2025.
