Florida woman Demoree Hadley is accusing her mother, Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez, of using her influence to stage a forced psychiatric commitment in South Florida, allegedly to break up her marriage and cut her off from her husband.
In a lawsuit filed in Miami-Dade County and obtained by NBC Miami, Hadley claims Perez weaponized the Florida mental health system using the Baker Act and Marchman Act to detain her without justification. The suit accuses Perez and others of false imprisonment, harassment, and civil conspiracy.
Hadley’s attorney, Hilton Napoleon II, said the conflict erupted after a family dispute in Dania Beach earlier this year. Broward Sheriff’s deputies and a mobile crisis team took Hadley into custody under the Baker Act, which permits involuntary evaluations if someone is deemed a threat to themselves or others.
The decision reportedly came after a phone consultation with Dr. Daniel Bober, who authorized the commitment without evaluating Hadley in person.
“After meeting with Ms. Hadley and speaking with her mental health provider and members of her family, the decision was made to initiate the Baker Act in order to ensure her safety… ailing to take appropriate action… would have been a breach of Dr. Bober’s ethical and professional obligations,” Bober’s attorney stated.
Hadley tested negative for drugs but was still held under the Marchman Act at Life Skills South Florida until her release on April 8th. She claims Perez made false domestic violence claims against her husband, Javon Hadley, a charge Perez denies in her countersuit, citing concern for her daughter’s well-being.
