D.L. Hughley is making it clear that he isn’t buying Nicki Minaj’s recent political makeover.
On Christmas Day, the legendary comedian shared a video addressing Nicki’s high-profile appearance at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest.
While Nicki took the stage alongside Erika Kirk to praise the current administration and express her “utmost respect” for the president, D.L. was busy pulling up the receipts to show why this partnership is more than a little awkward.
Hughley used his platform to highlight the major contradictions between the movement’s founders and their new celebrity guest.
He played a clip of the late Charlie Kirk explicitly discrediting the rapper, where the activist stated, “I don’t think that’s a good role model for 18-year-old Black girls.” D.L. also pointed out the hypocrisy surrounding immigration, noting that Kirk famously argued against opening borders while Nicki herself immigrated to the U.S. from Trinidad as a child.
“Nicki Minaj is virtually everything that the man [Kirk] who started that movement was against, but, yet, she finds herself the keynote speaker at the very movement he founded,” Hughley remarked.
The comedian didn’t stop at the political irony, suggesting that this new alliance is nothing more than a convenient business deal.
D.L. claimed the relationship between the rapper and her new political allies is purely “transactional.” He questioned how quickly the MAGA base seemed to toss their own principles aside for a celebrity endorsement, adding, “I find it ironic that the members of MAGA would turn their back on their principles so swiftly for convenience sake.”
He further critiqued the group’s focus, suggesting they seem to “hate everything except racists, pedophiles, and sellouts.”
The commentary took a personal turn as Hughley brought up the legal histories of the men in Nicki’s life, implying that her new circle is unbothered by her family’s past.
“It astounds me that transgender people draw their ire more than pedophiles, but I guess for Nicki, that would be par for the course,” he stated. He ended the video by claiming that within this specific political world, certain backgrounds don’t seem to be disqualifiers. “Her brother is a pedophile, her husband is a registered sex offender, and we know that MAGA doesn’t have an aversion to that; that isn’t a disqualifier for them,” he concluded.
