Actor and filmmaker Donald Glover is responding to critics accusing him of being anti-Black women.
During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Glover faced the longstanding chatter that he doesn’t exactly like nor appreciate Black women, even those he casts in his projects. Several of his films, including the limited series, “Swarm,” have fueled this narrative. Many believe Glover displays Black women in less than favorable light. He famously interviewed himself in 2022, where he posed the question, “Are you afraid of Black women?” This caused even more discourse, though the “Atlanta” star says people have got it all wrong.
“I felt like it was something that people always say, but no one ever asked because I felt like people really don’t want to know. It is a better narrative. But anybody who actually knows me knows how much that hurts me,” he shared with the outlet.
“Swarm” garnered so much backlash due to Glover’s approach to the leading role of Dre. She portrayed the obsessed fan of a superstar, which some believe was based on Beyonce. Glover previously alluded to not giving actress Dominique Fishback much preparation for the part, telling her instead to “Think of it more like an animal and less like a person.” This angered fans, and Glover having a non-Black partner only added to the belief that he does not respect women of color. Still, while Glover says this is far from the truth, he is not confident that people will change their perception of him.Â
“People are not going to read this and be like, “Wow, I was wrong,” he added in that chat with THR. Â
