Donald Trump has commuted the prison sentence of former Congressman George Santos, who had been serving seven years for federal fraud charges. The decision, revealed Friday on Trump’s social media platform Truth Social, immediately set off a political firestorm.
“George Santos was somewhat of a ‘rogue,’ but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison,” Trump wrote.
Trump also described what he called unfair treatment during Santos’ incarceration. “George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life,” Trump added.
Santos was being held at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, New Jersey. The announcement comes less than a year after his conviction for multiple fraud-related offenses that led to his expulsion from Congress.
The unexpected commutation has already sparked mixed reactions across political lines, with critics questioning the message it sends about accountability and justice.
