eBay is not interested in participating in the current Jeffrey Dahmer frenzy.
The auction platform is purging its site of anything that resembles a Jeffrey Dahmer Halloween costume as interest in the serial killer has heightened following the grueling Netflix series documenting his life. eBay reported an increase in searches for Dahmer-inspired wigs, shirts, and the famous glasses that the cannibalistic killer was known to wear. While many people may still get away with selling “elements” that could make up a Dahmer look, selling complete, branded Jeffrey Dahmer costumes violates eBay’s user agreement, which has rules against violence and criminals.
A family of one of Dahmer’s victims slammed Netflix for opening up a can of worms that motivated people to dress up like him this trick-or-treat season. A daughter of another victim says she has had nightmares since the series aired, which depicted her father’s final moments on earth.
One of America’s most sadistic killers, Dahmer murdered and chopped up 17 victims, most of which were Black and brown gay men. He ate parts of some victims while storing others as keepsakes. His youngest victim was just 14 years old. Dahmer was convicted of 16 murders and received life in prison in 1992. He was beaten to death two years later by a fellow inmate.
“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” has been Netflix’s number-one series since its release. The signature eyeglasses were among the first Dahmer item to gain the most attention online. Even Rick Ross joked about wanting a pair, though immediate backlash caused him to delete his request from social media.
Other Halloween retailers such as Spirit, Halloween.com, and Party City have announced that they will not be carrying Jeffrey Dahmer costumes.
