Embracing Self-Care Without The Guilt: The Importance Of "Me Time" For Parents

Parenting is one of those things in the world that comes with many pros and cons. While being a parent can be the most fulfilling job on the planet, it also comes with a slew of challenges that can cause stress. As a result, some parents set aside time to repair their mental health. But, since society has put pressure on parents to be perfect and completely dedicate their lives to raising a child, many individuals tend to feel guilty for taking time for themselves.

We recently reported that the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, released an advisory to advocate for the mental health of parents. Dr. Murthy, who is a father of two, described parenting as the “toughest and most rewarding” job he’s ever had.

In his advisory, Dr. Murthy highlighted the current reality of parents that could be concerning. As of now, reports show that 41% of parents have stated that their stress levels are so high most days that they find it hard to function properly. Meanwhile, 48% reported that their stress is more overwhelming compared to other adults. These statistics point out an ongoing issue amongst parents, including the hidden struggles of stress, shame, and guilt. As a result, many parents will bury their emotions, believing they can handle everything by themselves without seeking support.

One of the biggest challenges parents face is feeling regretful for taking some “me time.” However, Dr. Murthy noted that this feeling is misplaced. He emphasized and advocated for a cultural shift that recognizes parenting as essential work. This would alleviate the guilt parents face, as it would acknowledge that self-care is needed and can be useful for good parenting.

Nonetheless, we have compiled a list of ways parents can enjoy time to themselves without feeling the guilty. Check out our list below:

  • Flexible Work Arrangements: One of the examples Dr. Murthy used to help parents with their mental health is adding more flexible work arrangements. Parents can use these arrangements for emergencies and things like taking a longer lunch break or completing tasks earlier to enjoy the remaining time alone. These small adjustments can make a bigger impact than you may know.
  • Community Support: Community programs and affordable childcare are essential when carving out time for yourself. These programs allow parents to enjoy a moment of childless freedom without the fears and worries of their safety.
  • Embrace Hobbies/Interests: Rediscovering hobbies and interests outside of parenting can be extremely fulfilling. Dedicating time to personal interests can rejuvenate parents and lets them having a feeling of self-worth while enjoying things that brings joy.
  • Make A Schedule: One of the best ways to enjoy “me time” is to treat it as another other self-care appointment. Putting your “me time” on a visible calendar can make it feel like a priority, similar to any other commitment. Additionally, having a visual of your “me time” can add excitement and anticipation, making the moment that much special.
  • Set Boundaries/Involve Your Kids: When it comes to establishing “me time,” it’s important to remember boundaries. As parents, many people tend to forget their boundaries, but in this situation, communicating your boundaries with your family can help set expectations and reduce feelings of shame. Also, try to involve your kids and explain to them why setting out time for yourself is important and necessary. This can help children understand respecting others’ personal time and space.
