Eminem recently celebrated a significant milestone—16 years of sobriety. The iconic Detroit rapper commemorated this achievement on April 20 by sharing an image of his latest sobriety chip on social media, marking over a decade and a half since overcoming his struggles with addiction.
Eminem’s journey into sobriety began in 2008 following a near-fatal overdose that served as a wake-up call. This critical incident came after years of battling addiction, which he detailed in an essay for XXL in 2022. Eminem’s issues with addiction began shortly after the release of his 1999 album, *The Slim Shady LP*. His situation deteriorated over the next several years, particularly during the period following *The Eminem Show* in 2002 and leading into the production of 2004’s *Encore*.
“I was able to downplay my addiction and hide it for a while until it got really bad,” Eminem wrote. “I was taking Vicodin, Valium, and alcohol. I kinda fell off the map a little bit and didn’t explain why I went away.” The loss of his close friend Proof in 2006 further exacerbated his addiction, leading to a period of severe dependency. “I remember just after Proof died, I was in my house by myself, and I just kept taking more pills. I literally couldn’t walk for two days when that happened and eventually, my drug use skyrocketed.”
The turning point for Eminem came after a methadone overdose in 2007, which nearly cost him his life. This alarming episode prompted him to seek help and commit to sobriety. His journey since then has not only been a personal victory but an inspiration to many who struggle with similar issues.
