Eve is taking us down memory lane, recounting the good, bad and ugly moments of her career.
In her new memoir “Who’s That Girl?,” Eve opens up about a brief romance in her life that stirred up the music industry and her relationship with Interscope Records.
It was August 2001, and Eve was cohosting the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards when she learned Suge Knight was in the building.
“I knew what I had to do,” she writes. Ignoring her bodyguard’s hesitation, she approached Knight herself. “Hi, I have been wanting to meet you.”
That bold move turned into a dinner date, where Knight promised to support her through label frustrations. At the time, Eve had released two albums and was unhappy with Dr. Dre and their working relationship. Suge served as a way to hit the producer below the belt.
“I was still in my little mood about Dre… so having Suge, his former boss at Death Row stomping around Interscope felt like some sweet revenge,” she admits.
Suge later walked into Interscope on her behalf, a visit Eve says didn’t sit well with Jimmy Iovine.
“I feel like he [Jimmy] took his anger out on my third album,” she recalls.
Their romance fizzled when Ruff Ryders’ Dee and Waah Dean stepped in.
“They didn’t like the idea of me hanging out with Suge at all,” she writes.
When she called to break things off, Suge responded with understanding, admitting he would’ve given her similar advice.
Suge has not commented publicly on Eve’s version of events. However, judging by his willingness to revisit his rap history from behind bars, it’s only a matter of time before he does.
