The FBI has once again removed multiple agents and supervisors, this time targeting individuals tied to the investigation into Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
Sources told the Associated Press that some terminations were delayed on Monday, briefly after D.C. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro raised concerns. But just a day later, those same employees were let go once again. The exact number of firings is still unknown.
This wave of dismissals comes under the direction of FBI Director Kash Patel, whose leadership has already triggered a string of high-profile departures. His critics, including the FBI Agents Association, claim the moves are politically motivated.
“The actions yesterday — in which FBI Special Agents were terminated and then reinstated shortly after, and then only to be fired again today — highlight the chaos that occurs when long-standing policies and processes are ignored,” the association said. “An Agent simply being assigned to an investigation and conducting it appropriately within the law should never be grounds for termination.”
Some of the fired personnel were reportedly involved in the high-profile Trump investigation led by Special Counsel Jack Smith. That probe has faced heavy scrutiny from Republican lawmakers, especially after reports that agents examined phone records of GOP senators during the inquiry.
Earlier firings included senior officials who pushed back against Trump-era demands and agents seen kneeling during racial justice protests. Legal action is already underway, with former officials suing Patel for alleged political retaliation.
