Fitness icon Richard Simmons‘ cause of death has been officially confirmed as accidental, following complications from a recent fall. The news was shared by family spokesperson Tom Estey, who spoke to PEOPLE on Wednesday, revealing that the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office delivered the update to Simmons’ brother, Lenny.
“The Coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed. The family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss,” Estey said in the statement.
Richard was found on August 13 by his longtime housekeeper, just one day after he had celebrated his 76th birthday. Although the Los Angeles Police Department had earlier confirmed there was “no foul play,” the cause of death was initially deferred for further testing. Reports indicated that Richard had felt dizzy on August 12 and suffered a fall. He had mentioned to his housekeeper that he might seek medical attention the following day if he didn’t feel better.
RIP Mr. Simmons.
