Bishop Lamor Whitehead Convicted

On Monday, Brooklyn pastor Lamor Whitehead was convicted of fraud, attempted extortion, and lying to the FBI for swindling an elderly woman and using his mayoral connections to extort a Bronx business owner.

Federal prosecutors outlined how the flashy leader deceived Pauline Anderson, the mother of an elderly parishioner, out of $90,000. In addition, he attempted to extort more funds from a Bronx auto body shop owner, pledging to secure “official favors” from Mayor Eric Adams.

Last month, prosecutors called Whitehead a “conman who told lie after lie to victim after victim.”

Prosecutors revealed that the pastor squandered the funds on personal indulgences, such as shopping sprees at Louis Vuitton and Footlocker, along with BMW car payments. Additionally, the pastor sought a $500,000 loan from auto body shop owner Brandon Belmonte, using the promise of favors from the mayor as leverage, claiming that Adams would “do whatever I wanted.”

“The defendant abused that trust by lying again and again. He lied about how much money he had. He lied about his business plans. And he lied about having influence with powerful people. All with the goal of getting money and property to fund his extravagant lifestyle,” said prosecutor Jessica Greenwood last month.

She said, he “used lies and threats to get money from his victims, and when lies caught up to him, he lied to the FBI.”

Additionally, Whitehead, the pastor of Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries in Canarsie, faced a false statement charge for lying to FBI agents about his phone ownership during a fraud investigation.

In July 2022, Whitehead made headlines when he and his wife were robbed at gunpoint by masked bandits, who stole the bishop’s $75,000 Rolex, a $75,000 Cavalier watch, a $25,000 ruby and diamond ring, and other valuables.

That same year, he was arrested after he created fake bank statements to secure a $250,000 loan, falsely claiming he had millions in a company account that actually had less than $6.

His lawyer intends to appeal the verdict, and his sentencing, carrying a potential maximum of 45 years in prison, is scheduled for July.
