Flau’jae Johnson is keeping it a stack when it comes to her family ties and her climb to the top. During a sit down on the Thursdays episode of the Heir Time podcast, hosted by Reginae Carter, the LSU basketball star and rapper got real about whether the “nepo baby” label actually fits her.
While plenty of people assume she had a head start because of her father’s status in the game, Flau’jae made it clear that her experience was the exact opposite. Her father, the legendary Georgia rapper Camouflage, was tragically killed in 2003, just months before she even entered the world. Without him there to pull strings or introduce her to the right people, Flau’jae says the doors didn’t just swing open, they were actually harder to get through.
“Do I see myself as a Nepo baby? No. Because I feel like my dad, like, him dying before I was born kind of like halted the doors that I could have stepped in easily if he was like, ‘Yo, this is my daughter. She raps,’” Flau’jae explained. While she’s happy to see others like Bronny James benefit from their family name, she knows her journey required a different kind of grind.
She admitted that while she knows she can’t “fully fill” the shoes of the man she never got to meet, her mother made sure she knew how to carry the torch. “‘So, represent him, but just know that you’re building this for yourself, as well,’” Flau’jae recalled her mom telling her.
Even with her father gone, Flau’jae has found support in the industry from those who respected his legacy, specifically Boosie. She’s previously shared how Boosie stepped up as a mentor and “uncle” figure to look out for her.
Now at 22, Flau’jae isn’t just satisfied with being a dual-threat on the court and in the studio; she has her sights set on becoming a full-blown mogul. “The rapping and basketball kind of became my legacy, but I want to be an iconic mogul,” she told Reginae.
With the way she’s handling her business, it looks like she’s well on her way to making that dream a reality on her own terms.
