Floyd Mayweather’s uncle and boxing trainer, Roger Mayweather, has passed away.
Roger, who was considered one of the most famous boxing trainers in the world, died at just 58, Floyd’s team confirmed to TMZ Sports.
Roger is credited with molding Floyd into the top fighter he is today and was a key member of his training team.
The news of Roger’s death comes just a week after Floyd’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his children, Josie Harris, was found dead in her car. She was 40.
Roger, himself, was a 2-weight world champion, boxing against Julio Cesar Chavez, and held the WBA and lineal super featherweight titles and the WBC light welterweight title.
Roger had been in poor health for years, and in 2015, Floyd said boxing had damaged his uncle’s brain after 72 fights in the ring.
In 2016, Roger went missing and was found by police.
“My uncle Roger Mayweather has lost a lot of memory from the sport of boxing,” Floyd said at the time. “He’s only in his 50s, but it seems like he’s an old man in his 80s.”
TMZ Sports was told that Floyd is ‘deeply emotional’ about Roger’s death as the two were very close.
