Ford has invented a cable that can charge electric cars in about five minutes.
As more and more people move to invest in and purchase electric and clean energy vehicles, automotive companies are finding ways to keep up with consumer needs. Fox News reports Purdue University and Ford have come together to create a powerful charging cable that can be used at charging stations. Researchers say it can completely charge a vehicle in about five minutes.
The news outlet reports that the cable is built with a liquid cooling system that changes the liquid into vapor, helping it dissolve heat. “Today, chargers are limited in how quickly they can charge an EV’s battery due to the danger of overheating. Charging faster requires more current to travel through the charging cable,” Michael Degner, senior technical leader, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering, said, per the news outlet.
“The higher the current, the greater the amount of heat that has to be removed to keep the cable operational.”
The company is already working on getting the cable patented. There are no details on when the cable will be available.
