One former Louisville Metro Police Department detective will plead guilty for her role in the murder of Breonna Taylor.
Kelly Hanna Goodlett has been charged with one count of conspiring to violate Taylor’s civil rights. Goodlett wrote false reports to cover up the botched raid, including a statement that a postal inspector verified Taylor was receiving packages containing narcotics for her ex-boyfriend, Jamarcus Glover. She met with fellow former detective Joshua Jaynes to “get on the same page” about the deadly no-knock warrant.
When they stormed her apartment in March 2020, Taylor was asleep. Thinking an intruder was breaking in, her boyfriend Kenneth Walker fired in self-defense. Taylor was shot six times, and the officers did not render aid to her. Her death sparked international protests and demands for all officers involved to be arrested. None of the officers were charged with murder.
Goodlett is expected to testify against Jaynes, Sgt. Kyle Meany and former detective Brett Hankison in the forthcoming trial. The men all face violation of civil rights charges in the gruesome killing. Jaynes and Meany purposely lied on the affidavit to justify the search warrant with false information, while Hankison used excessive force when firing blindly into Taylor’s home.
Goodlett will enter her plea during an arraignment on August 22nd. For her cooperation, she faces no more than five years in prison. Pending the outcome of the trial, Goodlett was forced to surrender her passport and avoid contact with her co-defendants.
