Funkmaster Flex’s legendary run at Hot 97 is drawing to a close on September 1st, and he is promising to go out with a bang.
On Thursday, August 28th, the Bronx native took to Twitter to confirm that “THIS MONDAY LABOR DAY SEPTEMBER 1ST WITH BE MY LAST SHOW ON HOT97 AT 7PM! ALL THINGS COME TO AN END! END OF AN ERA THAT I ENJOYED VERY MUCH!”

Though he did not clarify whether this marked his full retirement, social media fans responded with heartfelt nostalgia and their final song requests. Many clamored for a replay of Jay‑Z and Ye’s “Otis,” recalling the iconic “bombs” he dropped in 2011. Funk Flex’s signature explosive effects on standout tracks have become his trademark.
Funkmaster Flex first took to Hot 97 in November 1992 and pioneered the station’s first hip‑hop program. He became known not just for nightly mixes but for artist interviews and giving guests the platform to drop freestyles in the legendary studio.
Earlier in August, he received the Key to the City of New York from Mayor Eric Adams, honoring “three decades of influence on the airwaves” and recognizing his “unwavering support for emerging artists, and his role in shaping the global reach of NYC’s hip hop scene through his iconic platform on HOT 97,” per MediaCo Holding Inc.
It’s unclear what his next move may be, though New Yorkers are sure to feel Funk Flex’s absence on the radio for years to come.
