Musician Gavin Adcock didn’t hold back when he grabbed the mic at a recent show. The country singer lit up the stage with a blunt message aimed directly at Beyoncé.
“Beyoncé….you can tell her we’re coming for her f**king a**. That s**t ain’t country music, and it ain’t ever been country music,” he said, holding a bottle while the crowd cheered him on. Adcock made it clear that he’s not just venting; he wants to knock her “Cowboy Carter” off the country charts.
Later, in a video posted after the concert, Adcock doubled down. He said he’s listened to a lot of her music and even called Bey’s Super Bowl Halftime Show “kick a**,” but that doesn’t mean he’s okay with her dominating a genre he’s dedicated his life to.
“I really don’t believe that her album should be labeled as country. music…I just don’t think people that have dedicated their whole lives to this genre and this lifestyle should have to compete or watch that album just stay at the top just because she’s Beyoncé,” he stated
His frustration seems to go beyond the music and centers on what he believes is the dilution of country music as a genre.
The controversy stems from Bey’s latest album being a bluegrass-country inspired project that’s been both celebrated and criticized since its release. Despite not receiving any nominations from the Academy of Country Music Awards, the album has been unstoppable.
On top of that, “Cowboy Carter” walked away with major wins at the Grammy’s including Album of the Year and Country Album of the Year. That level of success only added fuel to the fire, with critics questioning how authentic the project really is.
Still, Beyoncé hasn’t addressed the backlash. No tweets. No interviews. Just numbers, streams, and awards.
