A new biopic titled “Daddy Changed the World” about George Floyd is in development, with Radar Pictures, 8 Queens Film & Media Productions, and Night Fox Entertainment collaborating on the project. This film has the blessing of Floyd’s family, with his daughter, Gianna Floyd, and her mother, Roxie Washington, serving as executive producers, Deadline reports.

The screenplay will be penned by Gregory R. Anderson, known for “Stomp the Yard.” The film aims to depict the life of George Floyd, whose tragic death in 2020 sparked a worldwide movement against racial injustice and police brutality. While the search for a director is still ongoing, Ted Field from Radar Pictures, Dr. Kaeita Rankin from 8 Queens, and Timothy Christian from Night Fox will produce the film.

George Floyd was killed on May 25, 2020, when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for over nine minutes as Floyd lay handcuffed on the street. Floyd’s arrest was due to an alleged attempt to use a counterfeit $20 bill. His repeated cries of “I can’t breathe” during the ordeal became a powerful rallying cry for racial justice movements around the globe. Chauvin was later convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, and sentenced to over 20 years in prison for violating Floyd’s constitutional rights. Three other officers were also convicted for their roles in Floyd’s death.

The biopic won’t shy away from portraying Floyd as a complex individual with human flaws. Instead, it will present a raw and honest look at his life and the impact of his death on his community and the world. The film promises to be more of a gritty drama than a traditional biopic.

Roxie Washington expressed her excitement about the project, saying, “We are excited the world will see the real, jovial, and loving George we know. This film will humanize him, embody the essence of his life, and hopefully reignite efforts to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. It’s time for justice and equality for all.”

She added, “We need to make changes swiftly. No other child should lose their father like Gianna did. We thank everyone who stood with us and protested. George’s legacy will live on through this film.”

Timothy Christian of Night Fox echoed these sentiments, stating, “The killing of George Floyd was a tragic, shameful moment in our nation’s history. His story, while painful, deserves to be told and I’m grateful to be a part of it.”

Dr. Kaeita Rankin emphasized the significance of the film, saying, “I am committed to using my platform and talents to make a positive impact in the world. By telling George Floyd’s story and shedding light on the injustices faced by marginalized communities, I hope to inspire change and create a better future for generations to come. George Floyd’s legacy will not be forgotten, and I am honored to be a part of this important project.”
